Steve Cowson and Andrew Fearnley – A group winners
Rick Brookes and Maryann Van Blerk (Chapel Allerton)

Heaton racketball players made a significant impact at the opening tournament in the Academy of Rackets series for this year, held at Chapel Allerton last Sunday 28th January. Steve Cowman and Andrew Fearnley dominated the A group winning their respective round robin groups and meeting in a hard fought final, a showcase for the standard of play here are Heaton. Steve just shaved the victory in a match played in a great spirit.

Another Heaton player, Rick Brooks made it into the final of the D group where he met the formidable Maryann. This was another close fought final with Maryann running out the winner by 2 games to one. She was a bit faster, a bit stronger, a bit taller, a bit younger. Rick’s low cunning nearly unpicked her game but not quite. Next time! Terry Wassall also acquitted himself well by giving Marryann a hard match in his round robin group losing 9-11 in the final game after being 1-10 down. He also scored useful points from his play-off by beating regular Chapel Allerton antagonist Phil Hopps 16-14 in the final game.

Heaton have had a good record in these tournament series started in 2016. In the first year Rick was the D group overall champion and last year Terry Wassall claimed the D trophy for Heaton. However the standard has gone up every year and the matches get tougher.
